Grants And Scholarships Can Help Pay For Tuition

The “sticker price” for college and university tuition isn’t necessarily what students pay for studies at them. Many colleges and universities offer financial aid to offset what’s known as their published tuition rates. Students can find out about college and university scholarships by speaking with financial aid representatives at the institutions in which they’re interested.

There are scholarships that colleges and universities award based on athletic or academic performance. There are also scholarships that institutions extend based on year of study, subject of study, gender, race or ethnicity and other factors. Among the new college and university scholarships for 2010 and 2011:

A Hackettstown, New Jersey, institution is offering new scholarships for high school students within the state. These scholarships amount to $10,000 annually, according to an announcement in the Daily Record. They’re designed for high school students in New Jersey who have a strong community service background, the Daily Record item suggested.

In March 2010 a university announced two new scholarships intended for California students. They’re both designed to help students affected by a state budget crisis that has public colleges and universities in California making cutbacks. The California Commitment Scholarship provides undergraduate and graduate students who are California residents with $5,000. The Experiential Learning Scholarships make $1,500 available to California resident students who qualify for course at that college where they can earn academic credit for their work and life experiences. This university has also agreed to allow California community college students the ability to complete their associate degree programs with an online course.

A Florida college has announced several new scholarships. They include AAHD Scholarships of less than $1,000 for students who expect to pursue health promotion, public health or disability studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels; American Society for Engineering Education Scholarships and Fellowships of different amounts for students who plan to study science technology, engineering or math (STEM) subjects at the undergraduate or graduate levels; Trustee Florida Academic Scholarships that cover full tuition costs for first-time, full-time undergraduate students who have obtained Florida Residency Access Grants and who have met all Florida Academic Scholars Award eligibility requirements.

New academic-based scholarships from another university target math and science education. They’re known as Mathematics and Science Educator Scholarships, and they’re for teachers and students who want to become teachers. Per-term renewable scholarships of up to $4,000 in total tuition assistance per student are provided in instances where students meet eligibility requirements and demonstrate online college study readiness.

Government agencies also provide students with scholarships and other forms of tuition assistance, often on a financial needs basis. Students seeking tuition assistance often are advised to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be found online. With FAFSA, students receive electronic results as to the types of government assistance they might expect to receive, and students often have to complete the form in order to receive financial aid from colleges and universities. As always, learning the facts about free colleges will provide the best results.

Private scholarships online providers might also require FAFSA results. Non-profit organizations, professional associations, large corporations and community and civic groups offer private scholarships based on different criteria. What many scholarships have in common is that they often require accreditation on the part of colleges and universities where students intend to study. The US Department of Education keeps a list of these colleges and universities on its web site.
