Daily and regular practices for their sport is a non-negotiable for athletes. It is also inevitable that some circumstances that happen during the game can inhibit them from performing well. A few of the factors that can inhibit you players during a game are stress, fatigue, anxiety and even over confidence. When a player performs consistently then he or she will win in her or his respective sports. They have to be at top form whether in mind or body. This article is a great reference for learning how to obtain optimum performance consistently for athletes.
Number one, be sure that you keep your emotion incheck. When athletes have no control over their emotions then they will be distracted from the game itself. Emotions can come in suddenly, invading your consciousness and disturbing your normal though patterns. This can be very detrimental during competitions. In order to be at your best, you need to leave your emotions in check. This is a key part of success that I share in my San Diego sports psychology practice.
Next, it is important that you know how to perform well during pressured situations. Most people train without any pressure. So when the time comes during competition wherein the pressure is high, they tend to break. Therefore, make sure that you practice performing under pressure. This will provide you with an environment that will make you feel comfortable during your competition. Of course it would be hard to duplicate the feeling of pressure exactly, but the most common way to do it is through imagery and visualization. Athletes who see themselves performing successfully in pressure situations tends to be the better performing athlete. This is because they are already conditioned properly, so when pressure comes, it is just a matter of reverting back to training. This is what we suggest they do in my family therapist San Diego practice.
Last, practice controlling your mind and body to relax. This is to make sure that the performance degrading habit of negative thinking is minimized. By being focused and relaxed, athletes tend to perform better. Being able to stay calm has allowed my clients to be successful in my depression counseling practice.
These are the simple steps that you can heed for a better performance during your games. The conditioning of the mind and the body will surely help you to perform at your best during competitions.
